Redcar Central Station Conservation Project
Welcome to the Redcar Central Station information and marketing page.
Redcar Central Station is a Grade II listed Victorian station and train shed built in c1860 for the extension coastwards of the Stockton-Darlington railway. It was last in use as a business centre which closed in 2013 and has not seen railway use since the late 1980s.
Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council have agreed a long lease of the building from the Arch Company, a new organisation that purchased the majority of Network Rail's commercial properties in 2017.
The plans viewable here will see the Station building and train shed sympathetically restored to its former glory. We are exploring potential uses for the revamped station but expect a mix of daytime and evening uses such as:
Brewery tap/ bar, restaurant, shops, café, flexible spaces, markets, events, community activities, flexible workspaces, Toilets (including accessible spaces and changing facilities).
Rail uses - Indoor waiting areas, rail and other live transport information (subject to rail franchisee integration)
If you are interested in taking space in the building please contact Naylors Gavin Black on 0191 232 7030.

Night-time works completed
Share Night-time works completed on Facebook Share Night-time works completed on Twitter Share Night-time works completed on Linkedin Email Night-time works completed linkWe are pleased to announce that works to the trackside roof and elevation are now complete therefore there are no further requirements for night-time working.
We would like to thank you for your patience and understanding whilst these works have been taking place noting the restrictions we faced for working in these areas being dictated by when we could have safe and unhindered access to the railway lines.
Thank you also to Network Rail, Robertsons and all involved in facilitating and carrying out these works which I am sure you will agree have really lifted this part of the building!

Anchor tenant sought as Redcar station work progresses
Share Anchor tenant sought as Redcar station work progresses on Facebook Share Anchor tenant sought as Redcar station work progresses on Twitter Share Anchor tenant sought as Redcar station work progresses on Linkedin Email Anchor tenant sought as Redcar station work progresses linkNaylors Gavin Black has been appointed to fill the 14,000 sq ft that will be available following the redevelopment of the grade two-listed Central Station.
Once complete, the building will be fully powered by electricity and will have out-of-sight solar panels installed on the Victorian building.
The station building and the train shed are undergoing extensive conservation works, as well as modernisation to make it fully accessible, funded by the Levelling Up partnership, Welcome to Redcar and Cleveland fund, and the Railway Heritage Trust.
Work is expected to be complete this winter.
Earmarked for hospitality and retail, the council wants a mix of daytime and evening uses, including a tap room or bar, restaurant, shops, and flexible workspaces that could also be used for community events.
Indoor waiting areas, toilets, and changing facilities will, of course, be included as well.
Partner at NGB, Chris Pearson said: “We’re open to proposals for different uses but the obvious choice of anchor tenant would be a popular hospitality provider.
“The incoming significant investment in the station will help put Redcar on the map by creating a high-quality visitor experience and improving the look of one of the town’s main gateways.”
Cllr Lynn Pallister, cabinet member for growth and enterprise at Redcar & Cleveland Council, said: “The redevelopment of Redcar Central Station is a fantastic opportunity to breathe new life into one of Redcar’s most iconic buildings.
“As the project takes shape, we’re excited to see it become a destination for both locals and visitors, and we’d love to see a thriving mix of hospitality venues, cafés, bars, and retail businesses bring new energy and life to this space.”

New CGI Visualisations for Redcar Central Station
Share New CGI Visualisations for Redcar Central Station on Facebook Share New CGI Visualisations for Redcar Central Station on Twitter Share New CGI Visualisations for Redcar Central Station on Linkedin Email New CGI Visualisations for Redcar Central Station linkWe have new CGI images showcasing our vision for Redcar Central Station once conservation works are complete at the end of this year.
As you can see, the building could incorporate a mix of daytime and evening uses, such as a bar, restaurant, shops, café, and markets. The improvements to the Grade II listed station building will have a huge impact on the local community by introducing leisure and retail facilities and attracting more visitors to the station and nearby businesses.
The council is currently accepting expressions of interest from businesses and interested parties looking to secure space in the newly refurbished station. A variety of unit sizes are available, and we are also open to discussions with parties interested in securing a larger footprint or the entire building for the right proposal.

Roof Refurbishment Works Complete!
Share Roof Refurbishment Works Complete! on Facebook Share Roof Refurbishment Works Complete! on Twitter Share Roof Refurbishment Works Complete! on Linkedin Email Roof Refurbishment Works Complete! linkRedcar Central Station’s transformation is full steam ahead with the intricate roof refurbishment now complete.
Robertson Construction North East is restoring the Victorian station to its former glory while repurposing its derelict engine shed into a dynamic new space for @Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council.
Roofing works on this Grade II listed building included preserving and strengthening its original timber trusses, and installing a new ‘birdcage’ structure along with rooflights to flood the space with natural light. Traditional materials such as slate and brick were retained where possible to maintain its historic aesthetic.
With the roof complete, focus now shifts to groundworks and internal redevelopment. Once finished, the station will provide essential rail facilities while becoming a vibrant retail and leisure hub, featuring shops, bars, restaurants, flexible workspaces and community spaces.

Construction sites, companies, and suppliers voluntarily register with the Scheme and agree to abide by the Code of Considerate Practice. The Scheme aims to encourage best practices beyond statutory requirements within construction activities, focusing on three key areas:
- Respect the community: Minimize disruption and maintain positive relationships with neighbours and the public.
- Care for the environment: Reduce environmental impact and promote sustainable practices.
- Value their workforce: Foster a supportive, inclusive, and healthy work environment.
By achieving the full marks in a recent audit, the Redcar Central Station is achieving the highest possible score of 5 stars in all five sections of the Code of Considerate Practice. This signifies exceptional performance in all aspects of considerate construction, including community engagement, environmental impact, workforce welfare, site appearance, and safety.
Well done to all involved.

The work trackside (scaffolding and repairs) are continuing to progress. Network Rail have been carrying out essential track maintenance meaning a few Saturday night work shifts have been cancelled. Saturday night working
Share Saturday night working on Facebook Share Saturday night working on Twitter Share Saturday night working on Linkedin Email Saturday night working linkIn order to carry out works to the roof and trackside elevations we are required to work with Network Rail to book possessions of the railway lines outside of operational hours. This is restrictive as we have both passenger and goods traffic on this route through the day and night so the only option we have is for Saturday night working.
Whilst we will look to minimise noise and disruption from the works at all times we are aware that night-time working is more disruptive. We apologise for this and ask that you please bare with us.
If you do have any questions or feedback about this working please contact the team using the details provided on this page.
Thank you.
