Redcar Town Centre Transformation
Redcar High Street is set to receive a facelift thanks to investment from the Redcar Town Deal. Residents and visitors will soon see improvements to the area such as new street furniture, additional landscaping with plants and trees, improved lighting and more.
The appearance of the High Street will be improved, creating uncluttered spaces for events and activities. As part of the design, we will be celebrating Redcar's history and culture by introducing new public art work.
The aim is to help create a vibrant town centre which supports local independent businesses, jobs and encourages further investment. The location of the public realm improvements can be found on the plan in the Photos section of this webpage.

This is to revitalise the look of the High Street with new paving, new street furniture, landscaping with plants and trees, and improved lighting.
Improving the appearance of the High Street was one of the biggest priorities for residents when consulted by the Redcar Town Deal board, the funders of the project.
These works will be carried out in phases to ensure minimum disruption to the shops on the High Street, and access to all businesses will be maintained.
Phase 1, which is between the town clock and Regents Walk (pictured in yellow in the below graphic), will take place from April 22nd until October this year. Phase 2, which is between Regents Walk and the blue clock (pictured in blue in the below graphic), will take place between October this year until November 2026. Hoardings will only be in place in areas being worked upon and will be removed as areas are completed.
Access will be available to the High Street throughout the works and all businesses will be open as usual.
The Council has worked closely with the organisers of the town centre market to ensure that during each phase of works a dedicated space is made available.
We ask for your patience while these improvement works take place, but you will see a transformed High Street once works are complete.

Town Centre Works Begin Early 2025
Share Town Centre Works Begin Early 2025 on Facebook Share Town Centre Works Begin Early 2025 on Twitter Share Town Centre Works Begin Early 2025 on Linkedin Email Town Centre Works Begin Early 2025 linkWe would like to inform residents, visitors and businesses that the programme of works for the Town Centre Transformation has been finalised, with works to start on the Town Centre in the new year, so as to remove any unwanted disruption over the Christmas period.
With the first phase of demolition now complete at the M&S and Goodwins site, we have been able undertake additional site investigations on the condition of the surrounding walls, structures and ground conditions. It has been identified that further works are needed, and could not be identified before the demolition of both buildings. Work continues in the background, with additional design work, licenses and Party Wall agreements being required. We aim to complete this work over the next couple of months.
In the interim, Robertson’s workforce has made significant progress at the Redcar Central Station Development which we will be updating you on in the coming weeks.
If you have any questions with regards to the above, or would like to offer your thoughts, please don’t hesitate to reach out via rediscover@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk. -
REDCAR TOWN DEAL PROGRAMME UPDATE
Share REDCAR TOWN DEAL PROGRAMME UPDATE on Facebook Share REDCAR TOWN DEAL PROGRAMME UPDATE on Twitter Share REDCAR TOWN DEAL PROGRAMME UPDATE on Linkedin Email REDCAR TOWN DEAL PROGRAMME UPDATE linkThe Redcar Town Deal Board has recently made some key decisions regarding the projects within the Town Deal programme. Following rising costs, predominantly through inflation, it was recognised that there was a budget shortfall.
In order to ensure the delivery and high standards of key aspects of the overall programme the Town Deal Board have had to consider, and choose, which elements of the works can-not proceed, and they are:-
Station Road improvements. This will affect the area between the Queen Street junction up to Redcar Central Station. The survey and design work that has gone into Station Road will enable work to start at pace should alternative funding be secured.
-
Illumination of the Plimsol Line on High Street. An alternative way of referencing this important association will be explored.
- Seaside Properties. The planned painting of properties along parts of Newcomen Terrace will no longer proceed.
While these projects can-not proceed at this time it is hopeful that they can be revisited in due-course. The savings made by removing the projects identified will support the best possible outcomes for the works on the High Street, Esplanade and the new Culture & Leisure Anchor Attraction.
Catherine Clennet, Chair of the Town Deal Board reported:
“It is excellent news that we have now reached the stage where these transformative projects are becoming a reality. The work in the town centre will provide a focal point for people visiting the town centre and will bring prosperity to the High Street and Esplanade.
“Unfortunately, we have not been immune to the steeply rising costs associated with major projects and we have had to take some decisions we would not have wished to. However, the board is hopeful that the projects which cannot now go ahead can be revisited in the future through alternative funding.” -

Residents and tourists will soon see improvements to the area such as new street furniture, more landscaping with plants and trees, improved lighting and more.
The aim is to help create a vibrant town centre which attracts more visitors and residents, supporting local independent businesses, jobs and attracting further investment.
Members of the public including local business owners are being invited to a special drop-in event to see new images of the proposals. The event takes place on Thursday 22 June at Rediscover Redcar on West Terrace between 10am and 7pm. This is the first of a series of consultation and drop-in events which will run from the new Rediscover Redcar office.
The attendees will get first sight of the new CGI images and project plans and will be able to speak directly to architects, designers and contractors directly involved in each featured development.
The project aims to:
- improve the appearance of the high street by creating an uncluttered environment and developing spaces for events and activities;
- improve the appearance of the southern section of the esplanade by resurfacing and widening pavements, introducing seating and lighting. Dundas and Bath Street will accommodate some parking re-located from the Esplanade;
- improve Station Road by improving pavements, road crossing and street furniture.
This is all part of the Redcar Town Deal. Back in 2019, Redcar was awarded £25 million from the Government’s Town Deal programme and a Redcar Town Deal board was established for the fund, led by a group of industry experts, business leaders, and community representatives, who have volunteered to support the regeneration of Redcar. Alongside Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council, they have helped develop large-scale regeneration plans which will make Redcar a more vibrant, sustainable town.
Cllr Lynn Pallister, Cabinet Member for Economic Growth at the Council, said: “We want as many people as possible to come along to this drop-in event to view the proposals. You’ll get first sight of the new CGI images and will be able to speak directly to the project team and designers involved in the process to answer any questions.
“This Town Deal investment will help restore pride in Redcar High Street, upgrading the look for the benefit of residents, visitors and our local business owners.”
