REDCAR TOWN DEAL PROGRAMME UPDATE
The Redcar Town Deal Board has recently made some key decisions regarding the projects within the Town Deal programme. Following rising costs, predominantly through inflation, it was recognised that there was a budget shortfall.
In order to ensure the delivery and high standards of key aspects of the overall programme the Town Deal Board have had to consider, and choose, which elements of the works can-not proceed, and they are:
-
Station Road improvements. This will affect the area between the Queen Street junction up to Redcar Central Station. The survey and design work that has gone into Station Road will enable work to start at pace should alternative funding be secured.
-
Illumination of the Plimsol Line on High Street. An alternative way of referencing this important association will be explored.
- Seaside Properties. The planned painting of properties along parts of Newcomen Terrace will no longer proceed.
While these projects can-not proceed at this time it is hopeful that they can be revisited in due-course. The savings made by removing the projects identified will support the best possible outcomes for the works on the High Street, Esplanade and the new Culture & Leisure Anchor Attraction.
Catherine Clennet, Chair of the Town Deal Board reported:
“It is excellent news that we have now reached the stage where these transformative projects are becoming a reality. The work in the town centre will provide a focal point for people visiting the town centre and will bring prosperity to the High Street and Esplanade.
“Unfortunately, we have not been immune to the steeply rising costs associated with major projects and we have had to take some decisions we would not have wished to. However, the board is hopeful that the projects which cannot now go ahead can be revisited in the future through alternative funding.”
