Project Update

We're pleased to confirm that the Station Road and Queen Street Improvement Scheme is moving forward.

Earlier plans to deliver the project as part of the wider town centre improvements could not proceed due to funding challenges. However, the Council has now identified funding to allow the scheme to be taken forward.

Much of the survey, consultation and design work previously completed remains relevant and provides a strong foundation for the project. This means work is already underway to review and update the earlier designs, helping the project progress more quickly.


What changes are proposed?

The scheme will deliver a range of improvements across Station Road and Queen Street to make it safer, more attractive and easier to use. Wider pavements will be created in some areas, giving pedestrians more space to walk safely and comfortably. New paving and additional trees will also be installed to enhance the appearance of the streets and create a more welcoming environment.

Changes will be made to the road layout to improve parking arrangements, as well as drop-off and loading areas for businesses and visitors. Street lighting will be upgraded to improve visibility throughout the area, and additional CCTV cameras would be installed to help improve safety and security.


Why is this scheme needed?

The proposed improvements are designed to make the town centre a more pleasant and enjoyable place for people to visit and spend time. By creating a more attractive environment, the scheme aims to encourage greater use of the town centre and support local shops and businesses.

The improvements will also enhance safety for pedestrians and visitors, while making the area more accessible and easier to navigate for everyone. Overall, the project seeks to create a vibrant, welcoming and user-friendly town centre that meets the needs of residents, businesses and visitors alike.


When will works start?

Work is expected to begin in Spring 2027, subject to funding being secured and planning permission being approved.
