The Redcar Town Deal Board has recently made some key decisions regarding the projects within the Town Deal programme. Following rising costs, predominantly through inflation, it was recognised that there was a budget shortfall.

In order to ensure the delivery and high standards of key aspects of the overall programme the Town Deal Board have had to consider, and choose, which elements of the works can proceed.

Unfortunately, this means that the improvements to the Esplanade will now no longer proceed.

The survey and design work that has gone into the Esplanade will enable work to start at pace should alternative funding be secured.

The savings made by removing the projects identified will support the best possible outcomes for the works on the High Street and the new Culture & Leisure Anchor Attraction.

    Kirstyob asked 11 months ago

    Dear Kirsty,

Thank you for getting in touch. In response to some of your queries, please see the bullet-points below:

    • As is currently the case, illegal parking along the Esplanade will continue to be enforced. We would advise members of the public to report illegally parked vehicles to our Customer Services Team on 01642 774774 between 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. You can also log illegally parked vehicles by setting up as a resident and user on our website: https://redcar-cleveland-self.achieveservice.com/en.

    • Businesses have been consulted and have been made aware of the proposed changes to parking. Please note that there will be a net gain of parking spaces made available due to the proposed scheme. Alternative accessible bays will be created on Bath Street and Dundas Street. A number of accessible parking spaces will also be available along the Esplanade.

    • Unfortunately, we are unable to utilise UK Government Levelling Up funding for revenue schemes, such as creating additional parking wardens. The funding is primarily for capital projects, such as improving Redcar’s townscape and infrastructure.

    • We encourage residents and visitors to report vandalism or graffiti in Redcar Town Centre via calling 01642 774774. You can also email us at contactus@redcar-cleveland.gov.uk.

    • New trees and greenery will be introduced as part of Redcar Town Deal, along Redcar High Street.

    • Our team at Rediscover Redcar (https://redcarcleveland.uk.engagementhq.com/town-centre-management) will soon be rolling out a High Street grant funding scheme, to encourage businesses to invest in our High Street, including potentially taking over derelict properties.

We would also like to encourage you to visit our Rediscover Redcar shop unit, where one of our friendly team would be more than happy to speak to you about all of the points raised. Please find us at Rediscover Redcar, West Terrace, TS10 1DS (next door to Redcar Contemporary Art Gallery).

    Thank you.

    Best wishes,

  • Share Can you tell me why you think it is a good idea to put seating on the shop/building side of the Esplande as it is never in the sun? There is usually a cold wind coming off the north sea so unless it is warm and sunny ( odd weeks we get during the summer months) it wont be used. It would be a good idea to do some nice planting as long as it can withstand the cold north east winds and also the wall/barrier to stop vehicles illegally parking all the way along esplanade as they do currently. on Facebook Share Can you tell me why you think it is a good idea to put seating on the shop/building side of the Esplande as it is never in the sun? Lesley Bishop asked over 1 year ago

    Dear Lesley,

    Thank you for your comments.

The introduction of seating is to accommodate the greater number of visitors that will now be able to access this area of the Esplanade due to the increased pavement size. Currently, visitors must cross over the busy road to the other side of the Esplanade to access public seating areas. New seating will alleviate this issue and provide greater opportunity for people to rest if required.

In terms of greenery, we are introducing trees and other planting to both the High Street and Station Road, as part of the broader works. We are also conscious of parking issues along the Esplanade and will be working closely with Enforcement to ensure that this area is monitored particularly following the completion of the works.

    Dear Sue,

    Thank you for your question.

New accessible parking bays will be provided outside the new Culture and Leisure Anchor Attraction building. As part of the Esplanade Improvement scheme some of the existing bays along the Esplanade will be relocated to Dundas and Bath Street, to allow the pavements along the Esplanade to be widened to improve accessibility.

    Best wishes,
    Town Deal project team.

Not happy with council decision making asked about 2 years ago

The provision of free parking is not within the scope of the Redcar Town Deal Programme.

The improvements to the Esplanade involve relocating several Accessible Parking bays to Dundas and Bath Street, which will improve accessibility to the High Street.

The aim of the investment is to respond to changes in the way people interact with town centres. This is by increasing leisure uses and creating an environment that visitors and residents want to spend time enjoying. Further details can be found within the Redcar Town Investment Plan that can be downloaded from this website.

Keith Gorman asked about 2 years ago

    Dear Keith,

The Vertical Pier is not within the scope of the Town Deal projects.

The Regent is reported to be trading well and has received fantastic reviews from both residents and visitors. The cinema has been a successful addition to the leisure offer of Redcar, helping to attract additional visitors and investment. It is also an attraction which is not weather dependent of which Redcar is in need. Further details on the performance of the cinema will be published in due course.

The improvements will allow more events to be held in the town centre, helping to support the fantastic range of independent businesses within the area. They will also create a pleasant and welcoming environment that will help attract visitors and residents to the area. Improving the pavements and image of the area, helps to attract additional investment and increases pride in the town centre.

The Town Deal programme has been subject to extensive public engagement from the initial identification of projects within the Town Investment Plan.

A variety of engagement methods have been used including consultation events on the High Street and in the Leisure Centre, 1:1 meetings with businesses and community groups, exhibitions, online surveys and postal surveys. All households in Redcar received a hand delivered survey, which informed the development of the Town Investment Plan.

Further engagement exercises will be organised as the projects are developed. You can now subscribe to a newsletter on this page to find out about future opportunities. Community engagement activity will also continue to be advertised through social media and press releases.

Parking spaces on the Esplanade are currently either accessible bays or loading bays.  Loading bays are to be retained at the front of the Palace Hub and proposed Anchor building and nine accessible bays are also to be retained on the Esplanade.  Other accessible bays are to be re-provided on either Dundas or Bath Street.  A wider pavement is being provided to the south of the Esplanade to increase capacity.

Vehicle access along the Esplanade is not being restricted, but accessible parking and loading bays along the south side of the Esplanade are being reduced, with some re-located to Dundas and Bath Street.  Accessible parking numbers will remain as they are currently and will be located along Esplanade, Dundas or Bath Street.  Public toilets off Moore Street will still be available and there will also be toilets provided in the new Anchor Building for visitors utilising the facilities within it.
