This project focuses around the Chapel Beck watercourse from Bakehouse Square to Hutton Lane and keys spaces in which it intersects. The proposed environmental improvements aim to increase active usage of and create an attractive recreation space for residents and to act as a focus for visitors to Guisborough.

The eastern section of Chapel Beck intersects with the vibrant Chaloner Street Scheme, with the proposals for increased café culture, murals, wayfinding and nature play being beneficial for both schemes.

Proposals for the central section are focused on improved safety and legibility to encourage more walking and cycling. Interventions include improved surfacing and wayfinding beside the beck along with general clearing and de-cluttering of the of the channel itself.

The western section runs through a greener, more open setting with the proposals focused on ecological improvements such as wildflower meadows, tree planting and habitat hotels. This is combined with wider pathways for shared cycle routes and areas of play and interaction with the watercourse. A pavilion and play feature set amongst the existing mature trees provides a space for relaxation and play.

  • Share Hello, I am very worried about the 'decluttering' of the beck - it is home to otters, water vole,; Kingfishers and Little Egrets visit, and wrens also nest in the banks. It does not need decluttering, it needs careful de-littering. I hope the present seats and benches will be repaired, and not totally replaced which is a waste of resources. If they are not maintained in the long term, then it is a waste of money. We need more bins in the park, at each entrance (eg at the Rectory Lane side.) Wider paths is a good idea. Is there any way the council has a community rep to speak to schools and businesses about littering? Every time the wind blows, plastic gloves blow into the beck from the fuel station near Sainsbury's. Businesses put up banners and posters with plastic ties, then leave them on the ground when changing over. The park and beck may benefit from a makeover, but without regular tlc, it will soon degenerate again. on Facebook Share Hello, I am very worried about the 'decluttering' of the beck - it is home to otters, water vole,; Kingfishers and Little Egrets visit, and wrens also nest in the banks. Thank you for getting in touch and for your comments.

We have worked closely with our Ecologist, the Environment Agency and our own drainage engineers in relation to the beck including the impact of any clearance works on local habitat and wildlife. This work may include removing litter from the beck itself.

Regarding street furniture, bin provision and general litter concerns, we would request that you please complete our online survey to to ensure that your comments are received by our design team. You can access the survey by clicking the following link: Chapel Beck Survey (September-October 2024).

    Dear Sandaig,

Thank you for getting in touch and for your suggestions.

We are conscious of anti-social behaviour concerns for Chapel Beck and are therefore exploring options as part of the improvement works. We would encourage you to report any incidences of ASB crime or disorder through to the Police on 101 (non emergency) or 999 in an emergency situation.

Please do feel free to share any additional thoughts via our most recent Chapel Beck survey, that you can complete by clicking the following link: Chapel Beck September Survey 2024.

    Thank you.

    Dear Angela,

Thank you for getting in touch.

While there are no plans in the current designs for a designated dog area, paving and general access will be improved to ensure more space for walkers.

In the meantime, we could encourage you to complete our online survey to share your thoughts on Chapel Beck. You can do so by clicking the following link: https://redcarcleveland.uk.engagementhq.com/embeds/projects/35491/survey-tools/39263.

    Thank you.

    Dear John,

Thank you for getting in touch.

The Chapel Beck project is classed as the area of beck and associated open spaces from Bakehouse Square to Hutton Lane. The project itself focuses on beck clearances in this central area, but also includes the open park area (opposite Sainsburys and near the Scout hut). The aims of the project are to improve the beck, upgrade the footpath for both walkers and cyclists, provide better seating and bins as well as addressing recurrent flooding in the Stumps Cross area. We will also be providing more street lighting in this area, whilst taking into account local ecology.

    Thank you.

    Best wishes,

Why does it take so long to go from detail design and planning permission to start Winter 24/25 ?

    Ianj asked 4 months ago

    Dear Ian,

Thank you for getting in touch.

We understand that the lengthy process of delivering projects can be frustrating, but rest assured that in order to deliver the best outcome it is necessary to complete several important phases, including applying for external funding, community engagement, design, development, delivery and post-project legacy. Each element also necessitates a rigorous procurement exercise to ensure value for money in terms of recruiting the best designer and/or contractor, as well as liaising with local stakeholders and providing updates at each step. Furthermore, we must also report progress to external funders, to ensure project objectives are on target.

While it would be preferable for projects to be delivered in a shorter timeframe, it is unfortunately a nature of capital project delivery that significant time is required to achieve the best outcome.

In the meantime, please check back on the website for project progress updates. Thank you.

    Best wishes,
    Guisborough Levelling Up Project Team
