FAQs
Project FAQs
What is the Redcar Central Station redevelopment project?
The conservation project will restore the Grade II listed Redcar Central Station, built around 1860, transforming it from a vacant, dilapidated building into a vibrant leisure and retail hub while maintaining its role as a key transport link. The redevelopment includes conservation work and the creation of commercial spaces for food, drink, retail and commercial outlets.
How is the project being funded?
The project is wholly external grant funded though the Government’s Levelling Up Partnership Fund, the Welcome to Redcar and Cleveland fund (via TVCA), and the Railway Heritage Trust.
When will the project be completed?
Construction work will be completed in late 2025 and the revamped station building is expected to open in early 2026. Conservation work began on May 20, 2024, following planning approval in December 2022.
How will the project benefit the local community?
The redevelopment will create jobs during construction and in the operation of the station and its businesses. It aims to attract more visitors, boosting local commerce, and provide a welcoming gateway to Redcar, complementing other local leisure developments like the seafront mini-golf course and The Regent cinema. The project is expected to enhance the town’s appeal and support economic growth.
What will happen to the historic features of the station?
The Grade II listed station and its train shed will be sympathetically restored to preserve their Victorian character. Conservation architects Howarth Litchfield are overseeing the project to maintain traditional materials and aesthetics, including keeping the original roof design. The restoration aims to revive the building’s former glory while adapting it for modern use.
Will the station remain accessible during construction?
Yes, access to the railway platforms will remain open during construction, though some disruption is expected, including night-time works on the trackside elevation. Signage will assist passengers in navigating the site, and the project ensures the building will be fully accessible to all upon completion, with step-free access improvements.
What sustainability measures are included in the redevelopment?
Despite its Victorian heritage, the project emphasises sustainability by using only electricity and installing renewable energy systems. Solar panels will be discreetly placed to preserve the building’s traditional aesthetic, and environmental improvements like enhanced fabric insulation and weatherproofing will enhance the station’s carbon footprint.
How can businesses get involved in the redeveloped station?
