King George V Playing Fields are the leisure heart of Guisborough with the leisure centre, swimming pool, bowls club, tennis club and football club all located on this site.
Proposals to improve the play provision at King George V, include a new wheeled sports facility with associated landscaping, natural play and seating features, new lighting and CCTV infrastructure to help deter anti-social behaviour, have been approved with the works due to start in summer 2026.
During spring and summer 2024, the design team hosted a series of engagement and co-design workshops with local groups, students, site users, and drop-in sessions open to anyone eager to share feedback and ideas. These collaborative sessions shaped the proposed design by prioritising community needs and preferences. In September and October 2024, the team held playback consultation sessions to unveil the masterplan design.
This spring, additional workshops with students and young people focused on developing the wheeled sports facility, exploring features and elements potential users wanted to see included within the design.
Construction is scheduled to begin in summer 2026.
Once complete, the upgraded facilities are expected to drive higher footfall across the playing fields and promote greater levels of physical activity among residents and visitors alike, delivering wider public health benefits for the Guisborough area.

Velo Solutions UK, the British division of the acclaimed Swiss pump-track specialist, has been appointed lead designer for the new wheeled-sports facility at King George V Playing Fields in Guisborough.
At the heart of the development will be a full-size, professionally engineered asphalt pump track, the signature product for which Velo Solutions has earned its reputation. The company has delivered high-profile circuits for Red Bull Crankworx festivals, UCI World Cup events and training venues used by Olympic BMX teams. The Guisborough track will feature the brand’s trademark flowing, roller-coaster layout, accommodating everything from children on balance bikes to experienced riders pushing for speed.
The circuit will incorporate progressive difficulty levels: rolling loops for beginners and younger users, faster racing lines for intermediate riders and a dedicated jump line – exceeding 44 metres in length – for advanced BMX, mountain-bike and skateboard athletes seeking airtime and technical progression.
Complimenting the main pump track will be a separate but interconnected street-style mini-ramp plaza, aimed specifically at skateboarders and scooter riders who prefer transition and street-oriented riding.
The wheeled-sports area will be integrated into a broader landscaped setting that includes additional natural play features, improved footpaths and new seating zones. Extensive environmental enhancements, such as native planting and sustainable drainage, will surround the facility to soften its visual impact and boost biodiversity.
