Temperance Square
The Loftus Masterplan vision is to transform Loftus into a modern market town with facilities and attractions for residents and a memorable destination for visitors.
We want to celebrate the town’s unique heritage and landscape and bring a year-round programme of events to the area.
The Temperance Square project is a key part of the masterplan, to open up public space on the high street and provide much needed training facilities.
The site at Temperance Square has a wonderful location on the high street, creating opportunities to enhance the public realm, open up views and provide a skills centre in a well connected location. The adjacent historic buildings offer a rich environment to respond to.
The steep slope across the site requires retaining walls and makes the structures more complex to build, but does offer opportunities for a more dynamic landscape.

Share Hi - thanks for the opportunity to ask questions. In general I support the redevelopment of Loftus and specifically this Temperance Square site. But I do have a few questions... 1) Will the sandstone from the site be used in the building or landscaping anywhere? 2) The artist impression of the landscaping looks great. Who will be responsible for future upkeep and planting? The town is poorly served at the moment in other areas with minimal grass cutting and very little planting by the council. (e.g. pocket park and other parks and kerbsides). 3) Are the 2 roof gulleys a good idea in our climate? I am sure building construction materials and techniques have developed but it seems like a recipe for leaks! 4) Am I right in thinking that the car parking is actually a net loss? There are currently 7 car spaces in front of the shops plus the spaces alongside the site on Newcommen Terrace. In the plan you state and show 7 places in total. The spaces on Newcommen Terrace have been lost. This is a serious concern in an area where parking is a key need and a priority of the regeneration programme. Will the new parking be restricted to people working and using the new building? If so, this will make matters even worse. We need visible parking to encourage passing motorists to stop and use our shops. 5) What will be happening to the building currently occupied by the training company in Skinningrove? (Old School?). Will that building now go out of use and become derelict? Thanks agaion for the opportunity to ask questions. Robin Robin Singleton on Facebook Share Hi - thanks for the opportunity to ask questions. Robin asked about 2 years agoHi Robin,
Thanks so much for taking the time to post your questions - I will answer them in the order that you asked them.
(1) As part of our sustainability agenda, we will aim to reuse any materials that we can from the site, either on this project or elsewhere in Loftus
(2) We have secured revenue funding to maintain the landscaping at the front of the new building
(3) The project architects examined a range of options for the building and are confident that the roof gully's will be fine for this project
(4) We will be encouraging staff at the new building to park at the Handale car park, leaving the spaces at the hub free for other users, such as clients of the hub and partner colleagues from the likes of Beyond Housing.
(5) The Employment Growth team had to leave the Skinningrove site during Covid as it was not fit for purpose. Since then, they have functioned from a number of temporary sites and are looking forward to centralising their services in the new hub building.
Discussions are currently taking place with a prospective tenant who is interested in taking over the whole Skinningrove building.
Thank you once more for taking the time to ask your questions. If I can help with anything else, please just let me know.
Kind regards,
Lindsey
