The Redcar Beach Base will host a range of exciting activities, sports and events. Its facilities will enable water, beach, and land-based activities such as windsurfing, kiteboarding, walking, horse riding, running, cycling and yoga. Redcar will become a destination for coastal activities and outdoor recreation, promoting healthier lifestyles and wellbeing.

The Redcar Beach Base will be located in a unique shipping container village that can be used as a meeting place and an informal base for sports clubs/organisations, community groups, school groups, activity leaders, families, or groups of friends. Facilities will include a range of indoor and outdoor multi-use spaces, public and accessible toilets, showers, lockers, an equipment store, changing facilities and parking. An accompanying catering opportunity will enhance the experience for visitors.

The external space adjacent to the container village will form a flexible event area that could be used for a range of outdoor activities, such as exercise classes, sports and demonstrations. It could also provide space for an event village, from which competitions could start and finish, including running festivals and triathlons.

The Hub will be developed in a phased approach, allowing it to grow over time. The first phase will provide facilities which can be added to as its popularity grows. The future offer could also include equipment hire. The Coastal Activity Hub could in due course, be a base for larger events, with the adjacent hotel providing supporting accommodation.

Imaginative Productions, the operator behind Scream Factory and the Cafe at Kirkleatham Museum, won the competitive tender process and will operate the Redcar Beach Base. The project forms part of the wider seafront plans for Coatham.

How do I gain access to the showers?

Level200 asked about 1 month ago

    Thank you for your question.

Please note that the public shower facilities are not currently open at the Coastal Activity Hub. We anticipate that the shower facilities will be accessible from mid-April onwards, once the operator has moved onto the site. Please check back on this webpage regularly for further updates. Thank you.

    Best Wishes,
    Redcar Town Deal Project Team

Thank you for getting in touch.

Shower facilities will become accessible to the general public once the operator of the Coastal Activity Hub opens the site. We anticipate that the facility will be open around Easter period. We also anticipate that the Coastal Activity Hub will be open year-round. Further details will be published by the operator in due course.

    Thank you.

    Best wishes,

    Dear John,

    Thank your feedback and question.

For planned events, involving the Coastal Activity Hub and any associated activities, there will be health and safety checks and risk assessments in place. However, individuals partaking in windsurfing and paddleboarding, separate from Coastal Activity Hub events, will be responsible for their own safety, as is currently the case. Thank you.

    Best wishes,

    Redcar Town Deal Project Team

Dear Mike, thank you for your question.

Coatham is already used for a wide array of activities. We are keen to harness this interest by providing better infrastructure so that communities and sports groups can utilise the area to its full potential. Supporting existing activities and communities, as well as encouraging new groups to make use of the Coastal Activity Hub, will also attract new events to the area, thereby benefitting local businesses too.

Please see the response to Julie Simpson. The containers will be located in a landscaped area and new public Plaza. This will provide a welcoming space for gathering and holding events.

Shipping containers provide the flexibility to support the variety of uses proposed for the Coastal Activity Hub. Containers are also cost effective and can be added to in order to allow the Hub to expand as demand grows.

The Shipping Containers will be set within a landscaped plaza and have been designed to fit in with the surrounding uses. Further details on the design can be found within the Design and Access Statement, which can be downloaded from this web page. Free parking is not within the scope of the Town Deal programme. The Adventure Golf and Play area are now on site and will be completed in Spring 2023. The construction of the hotel is due to start in 2023.

The aim is for the Coastal Activity Hub to host a broad range of activities and events that will attract a wider range of people, including children. The intention is that the activities will be affordable and accessible for all.

Natalia asked over 1 year ago

    Dear Natalia,

Thank you for your question. Maintenance of the containers will be a condition in the lease arrangement for the long-term tenants. Additional street cleaning and litter picking will take place to reflect the increased number of visitors. A new 100 space car park is also currently being constructed at the neighbouring Coatham Bowl site to improve parking within the area.
