Town Centre Improvements Update
We've made some changes to the programme for the High Street improvement works. While we've encountered some unexpected challenges underground, the revised approach will help keep the project moving and is expected to bring overall completion forward by around six weeks.
✅ Work on Chaloner Street will pause from w/c 7 September while Northumbrian Water carries out essential drainage work. During this time, as much fencing as possible will be removed and vehicle access restored where it's safe to do so.
✅ From 7 September, work will start at the Bow Street/Church Street junction (between the former NatWest and Inspire), with temporary traffic lights in place. These works are expected to be completed by mid-October.
✅ From 14 September, work will also begin on the section of High Street between Westgate Road and Reid Terrace. These works are expected to be completed in early spring 2027.
✅ Work will return to the southern section of Chaloner Street in October, with smaller work areas used to help maintain access for businesses, residents and visitors.
These changes will help reduce overall delays, minimise future disruption and get the scheme completed sooner. Thanks for your continued patience while we make these improvements
